42nd USSR Chess Championship: Leningrad 1974 preserves a memorable chapter in Soviet chess history. Edited by David N. L. Levy and published by RHM Press in 1975, the book features games annotated by the players from the 16-player championship held from November 30 to December 23, 1974.

Mikhail Tal and Alexander Beliavsky shared first place with 9½/15, finishing half a point ahead of Lev Polugaevsky and Rafael Vaganian. Beliavsky turned 21 during the tournament, defeated Tal in their individual game, and captured the first of his four USSR Championship titles.
